Description

Therapeutic Life Story Work (TLSW) enables children and young people who have experienced trauma of child abuse and neglect, and who are struggling with the pain of their past, to reflect, develop compassion for themselves and move on. It is a defined approach, designed to introduce the past as markers for the present. Once these are understood, the child is supported in considering how to move on to make significant changes, as a result of a far deeper understanding and awareness of how their history has been negatively impacting on their present.

This comprehensive course is designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge and experience to undertake TLSW with children and young people. You will learn how to help them understand their behaviours, feelings and thoughts in light of their past and to enable them to reflect on what has happened to them by using intervention tools such as family trees and wallpaper work. The course further covers concepts of attachment, trauma, loss, relevant brain science, magical thinking, identity and meaning.

The TLSW Professional Diploma is taught on a part-time basis over one year. The teaching year is divided into four blocks of three days (12 days in total). You will be required to attend those 12 days of classroom training, conduct practical TLSW with an identified client, complete a written assignment, a supervision reflection piece and give an oral presentation. The teaching is planned to take place in Birmingham, London & Edinburgh, and also online via Zoom. (Dates and venues for 2025/26 to be confirmed) Once completed, you will be able to provide Therapeutic Life Story Work in your work setting or as an independent TLSW practitioner and be able to utilise the protected title of ‘Certified Practitioner’.

Attending this course will entitle you to 12 months student subscription as a member of TLSWi with access to course resources, support and information, and the opportunity to meet and share learning with fellow students and former alumni from across the globe.

For those who have already attended the Professional Certificate course (formerly Advanced Certificate) there is an option to ‘top up’ to the Diploma by attending 6 specific learning days. Please contact the administrator for more information via [email protected].
